One thing I have found in searching for sites to add to my portfolio is the tremendous span of crap out there. Now, you can define that any way you like, but what I am looking for is solid sites that have traffic, income, maybe a good Pagerank… but what I find a lot of times is sites that someone registered a domain name, popped up a template based site, and then try to sell the site for a ridiculous amount of money. This is good (well, could be argued either way actually) for the newbie that doesn’t know how to design a website, but to someone that has a little bit of experience in this, you know that having traffic and sales history is much more appealing.

So, in my searching, I have found there are certain things I am looking for. What I am going to set up (eventually) is a category on this site where you can post your site for sale. There will be certain factors that will have to be disclosed though. One of the first things is the site has to have at least a 3 month history. When Ben Bleikamp sold his poker blog, he had a solid three months of income proof (as well as daily content) and, likewise, his site sold fairly quickly and for a handsome price. Another factor is proof of income. If you are in the business, you should be able to take a screenshot of your income, minus any personal information of course. A simple paint program will be able to black that stuff out. Other little things will be required as well, but I will have a full template set up for submission.

I am going to wait on this portion of the site until I have a little more incoming traffic to be able to justify the listings. It should be fun to have a good site listing service. In the mean time, check out some of the places I search for sales listings:

Sitepoint
DigitalPoint

Here is a list of my favorite resources, some free, some not, but what I will use on a regular basis.

- 1&1 Internet Inc. My favorite way to register domain names. Cheap ($5.99) and a VERY clean interface to manage domains.

- Deasoft Software and Hosting Solutions - Allows me to host up to 50 domains on same reseller account. Also, cpanel access which is easy way to install Wordpress software, which is what I am using now for my blogs. I have been pleased with the customer service as well.

- Geektools - Free site that you can check WHOIS listings for domain names. I use it when I come up with that next great domain name (and then find out someone beat me to the punch! haha)

- Pixelfast Keyword and Bid tool (http://www.pixelfast.com/overture) This page combines the YPN keywords tool and bids tool so you can see them side by side. Great little free tool.

- Goodkeywords.com - I admit, I haven’t used this a ton, but the little I have, it looks like a great FREE keyword tool. There are plenty of expensive ones out there, but why not try this one and see if it works for you?

- HTMLKit - Free HTML editor that I have found to be a great way to hand-code sites. I know hand-coding is outdated for some, but the purist in me likes to go back the roots every once in a while.

- Clickbank - The resource for affiliate programs/products. This one has a lot of notoriety, so I don’t think I need to explain it.

- System Video Blog - Great blog tracking the progress of video on the web and how it will change the way we look at visual mediums.

- System Seminar - I’ll admit, this is a pricey conference, but it was WELL worth the price I paid and then some. I am going back again this year, and I can’t wait to get back and learn more. Ken McCarthy has a “no-pitch” philosophy. He wants you to learn, and not have to buy the speakers next great product. Although, after you hear some of the speakers, you will probably want to anyway. The content is *that* good.

-?? Okay, so I made a top 9 list. As I find more resources I will add them. In the mean time, do you have a good resource that I left out? Leave a comment and I will check into it.

I came across a similar blog to this one the other day. My first thoughts on it was that it was going to be competition for me. But after reading through it a little more, I think it will be a nice compliment to my site. In business, I know competition is good, but why not unite with competition (in some instances that is) and feed off each other. Teamwork usually pays larger dividends than individual work anyway. So, while the initial threat of my territory was exposed, I think I will be able to feed off this other site’s strengths. Please note, I am not suggesting plagiarism. There are plenty of copycats on the web, and I am sure some of them are doing quite well. With the broad scope of the internet, it is nearly impossible to have a truly unique idea or one that doesn’t crossover another in some portion of the idea.

So, here is the site: http://www.sitesalesblog.com/ Great domain name, good content, consistent posts (for the most part), and tremendous potential. Although, potential is nothing without action. I think this site doesn’t have to worry about that.

While the format for this blog will also post about interesting sites for sale, I hope to delve more in depth on why it is or isn’t a good buy and the potential pitfalls that would come with purchasing a site. There are plenty of spammy/scammy websites out there… we are going to sift through and find the good ones.

Happy site hunting!
